What changes the price

How the cable gets there
Surface-mounted trunking is quicker. Chasing cable into plaster takes longer and needs making good.
Minimum charges
Many electricians charge for at least an hour. Several jobs in one visit cost less each.
Outdoor work
Outdoor sockets need weatherproof fittings, RCD protection and sometimes a longer cable run.

How long it takes

Most single sockets or lights take an hour or two.

Rules and certificates

Adding a socket or light to an existing circuit is usually not notifiable, unless it is in a bathroom zone or needs a new circuit. It should still be tested, and you should get a Minor Works certificate.

Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to add sockets during other work?

Yes, much. If you are having a rewire, a new board or a kitchen fitted, add the sockets then.

Can I fit my own light fitting?

Like-for-like replacements are legal for a competent person in England, but if you are not sure what you are doing, an electrician’s minimum charge is cheap insurance.
