What changes the price

Distance from the board
A charger next to the meter is cheapest. One at the far end of a drive needs a long cable run.
The consumer unit
An old board with no spare capacity has to be upgraded first.
Main fuse and supply
Some older houses have a small main fuse, which the network operator may need to upgrade.
Tethered or untethered
A tethered charger has a fixed cable and costs a little more.

How long it takes

About 3 to 4 hours for a straightforward install. A long cable run, a board upgrade or digging can take most of a day.

Rules and certificates

New home chargers sold in Great Britain must be smart chargers. The government’s EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost, up to £500, but only for people who rent their home or own a flat, and who have private off-street parking. You cannot claim it if you own a house, unless it has been split into flats and you live in one of them.

Questions people ask

Can I get a grant for an EV charger in Bolton or Wigan?

Only if you rent or own a flat and have private off-street parking. Owners of houses are not eligible. Check the current rules on GOV.UK before you book, because the grant has changed several times.

Can I have a charger without a drive?

Not safely on most streets. Running a cable across a pavement is a trip hazard and usually needs council permission. Public and on-street chargers are the usual option for terraced streets.

Do I need a new consumer unit?

Only if your current board has no spare way, lacks suitable protection, or fails testing. The installer should check this at a survey, often from photos.
